Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

If you did the HANEN course - what was the most enlightening/useful aspect for you?

I've only done two sessions so far, but would be interested to hear what others have gained from it, and how much difference it made to your child's language development.

Most useful - without a doubt the home visits, where SALT would work with me on individual targets for DS!

Enlightening - the advice about non-verbal communication, the advice to Observe, Wait, Listen, and the advice to mix comments and questions, not just question your child.

In terms of difference - helpful. TBH though using PECs as an aid to increase sentence length as advised by private SALT has made more difference than anything I learned on the course.

actually - I've sort of done 2 hanen courses - 1 potted version, not run by SALT (hmm) and the proper one this summer. After the potted version course, DS started to get the hang of toilet training - this could be pure coincidence, but it could well be that by focussing more on imitating him and waiting for responses that I helped something "click" iyswim.

Very very useful for me. The OWL thingy was crucial for us, and also the play-led conversations.

We saw a massive leap in ds social interaction after doing this. If I was to say one single thing that was most useful it was interuppting ds at play. Getting down on the floor with him and crashing my train into his or holding a piece of a jigsaw so he had to ask me forit. Through this he learnt that social interaction could be enjoyable and as a result he now interacts all the time with his siblings.

We don't have any courses up here, only the book, but think it's fab.
