Autism/ ASD conference in Stockport, Greater Manchester

I went to this today and it was so inspirational, if a little depressing in terms of opening up my eyes to challenges that lie ahead e.g. post-19 services.

Met Charlotte Moore, whose book I loved, and loved her speech, as well as Rita Jordan's and two great male speakers whose names I've forgotten, and the workshops which were with people who are local professionals who talk a lot of sense. Also a very interesting speech on diversity and inclusion.

Anybody else there?

Will be booking again for next year - and would recommend it to anyone who's interested in ASD.

Charlotte was really down to earth and lovely and apparently they're reprinting her book to pupdate re: adolescence

went to the one last year which was fab but didnt make it this year.

am hoping to go next year though and will be watching to see when you can book.

Very political this year, though. One of the speakers was very pro-MMR-links-to-autism theory and one was very anti-it.

All speakers, professionals and parents, were pretty unanimously against the long-term usefulness of ABA. Said it was useful short-term for teaching specifics but said it didn't have long-term benefits and was too context-specific and didn't generalise well into all settings. Made me feel a bit better about J not being dx'd early enough to try ABA but I know one parent was quite upset as she was doing intensive ABA and felt it was working so it depressed her to hear all the studies that had shown that long-term it makes little difference. Also most were pretty-anti the GF-CF diet and said it benefited kids because parents were generally more careful on the diet about what food to give and so it helped by reducing the additives/ e-numbers.

Some good workshops on SALT and sex ed.

A great day, really, though a bit depressing about adulthood again. Though NAS were there telling us about what they're campaigning for for the future.

It's on the 10th November next year. Well worth going to, if only for the chance to ask some very well-respected and well-researched people some 1:1 questions at lunch .
