I really don't 'get' DS2's autism sometimes

We've just come back from a day in Newcastle - took the DSes on their first ever flight. And DS2 was fantastic - he was calm, obedient, coped well with the noise of the plane (and the rowdy stag party on the Metro), spent four hours in the Centre for Life (brilliant science museum), did a long walk and an open top bus ride and was just, well, like your average 6 year old in terms of taking everything in his stride.

And so I'm sitting here now and thinking WHY, given that he has so few behaviour challenges (and today seemed to have few sensory ones either) is he so bloody difficult to teach?

Sounds like your ds2 did brilliantly- really brilliantly - what a star!

Not sure if this would help, but I was rarely a problem to take anywhere that had something to look forward to at the end of it. I'd be sensible and obedient and do what I was asked to do, because oddly if we're going somewhere then there's often a) a plan (hoory!) and b) extra explanation of what will happen and c) if we're looking at things I enjoy, I'm not looking at people. And there are others doing the same things, so I can copy them if I don't know what to do.

Planes are a particular favourite of mine anyway. So are science museums.
Wonderful.

DS1 is similar although we are seeing more temper outbursts now which we see as a positive sign ! When he was in nursery, he was overlooked because he is not very demanding whereas the more 'outgoing' ASD children have to have their needs met so that does at least get communication going.

My DD is just the same has whole days when she copes brilliantly and you would'nt know there was anything wrong with her, but school is a whole different ball game so know exactly where your coming from and it is very frustrating

went to an autism talk a couple of wks ago, someone evans, and he was talking about a lad that was sat 3/4 of the way back in the classroom, who told the teacher he couldnt hear her, so she moved him forward, he then told her before i only had 12 problems now i have 36. he couldnt process the noise that he couldnt see, what was going on behind him, so really he needed to be right at the back. sorry just found it really interesting and certainly could shed some light on some of our ickle peeps meltdowns
