Teenage dyslexia - where to get help?

my cousin has recently approached me to see if I could help her track down a tutor or teaching program that would benefit her dd. her dd is 14 and just starting herGCSE courses. She scored very poorly in her SATs and obviously my cousin is worried about the effects failing at school will have on her dd's life. Her dd has been diagnosed with dyslexia and I think does a special reading scheme at school. the school have told my cousin they cannot afford a teaching assistant to give her one to one on the subjects she has most trouble with.

I am sure there are some fantastic resources around but I don't know where to start. can anyone point me in the right direction?

Son (teenage, diagnosed dyslexic) has got on great with some out of school tutoring and the use of a laptop so he doesn't have to use pen and paper, plus help here and there in school. Not sure about specific schemes, but Dyslexia Action are a good place to ask as they do some good assessments, resources etc (we found). www.dyslexiaaction.org.uk/Page.aspx?PageId=6

Thanks Amber, I have looked \t the DA website and there is a branch not too far from where we are. I am going to help her look in to local tutors who specialise in learning difficulties. she said her dd failed to get a grade in her KS3 SATS. I didn't know this was possible (my dcs are a long way from SATS!)

Look into getting her assessed for concessions for her exams. She may be entitled to extra time, a reader, use of a computer or a scribe. I think you have to get an assessment from an Educational Psychologist and then the recommendations are sent to the exam boards who say what concessions she is entitled to.
This will need to be done soon as she will have module exams coming up in various subjects.
