I have done some psychiatry at uni and thought that this sort of pseudo freudism was outlawed by now...

You know for one bloody minute I did think, 'oh god, did leaving him with a childminder give him Aspergers'. HOrrible how quickly the guilt kicks in. But realistically I know this is stupid and wrong.

And how old would this woman be? Trained in the 1920's, did she? Last practised psychiatry in 1955?

I'm in shock really. She apparently works as a trainer with this organisation British Association of Psychotherapists which apparently specialises in treating children

I have sent a strongly worded email inviting them to distance themselves from her stupidity and am await their response with interest. Anyone else interested in complaining is welcome to have a go!

My husband works with autistic students and I gave him that article to read.
He was so angry, He says a lot of parents of autistic children have at some time or other thought it might be their fault their child has autism. I suppose parents have an inbuilt guilt feeling when it comes to their kids.
Anyway he said she was talking a lot of shite and should never have been allowed to work with children with such outdated views.
We are also emailing them about her ridiculous views

I'd have paid real money to be left alone, personally speaking. We don't want 'normal' socialisation. It hurts. We learn how to do it because we realise other people need us to do it for their sake, not because it benefits us in any way whatsoever. We'd prefer to make friends by standing and playing parallel to someone, not looking at them, and talking about things that interest us, then leave when we're tired. Forget the eye contact, hellos, goodbyes, hugs, tones of voice etc. All 'not our language'. Why do these people not know this??! Arrghhh!

• complete sidenote - AMBER you are an absolute sweetie! yet again another eye-opening revelation. DS5 (2.5y autistic) very often 'backs up to me' (always does this, i assume so we dont have to have face-to-face contact) and brings a toy with him... he will sit on my knee and play with said toy so long as i dont actually interfere or touch or speak. I didnt realise he actually enjoyed playing 'with me' in this way, thought it was just a habit or something. I shall more enjoy these times knowing that he is happy and enjoying his time there. Thank you, again!

Back to matters in hand. OMG this woman needs a slap and dragging bodily (hedge backwards) into the... well at least 20th century, preferably the 21st as well! Perhaps we could all line up to slap her one by one, ahhh imagine the line...

I will email to complain too - if she wants to oppose science and reason when discussing autism then it should at least be mentioned that her view is an unusual one with no evidence to support it.

Misscutandstick, a compliment and love of the highest order from your ds5. He trusts you enough to risk being on your lap, knowing you'll respect his boundaries of what hurts/scares us. In a way, it's like you trying to get close to a wild deer stag in the forests: Direct eye contact scares them off, but sitting quietly, not looking at them directly, with something of interest to them might tempt them closer, and eventually they'll come right up to you and treat you as one of their own if they know you well enough. But one sudden unexpected move or event, and they're off again into the forests.

Depressingly, this is still the attitude of many professionals in France. I was talking to someone from a local autism charity the other day and they were saying that there are only two countries in the world where the classic approach to autism is still psychoanalysis - France and Argentina! Didn't realise this at the time, but I am SO lucky that DD's paediatrician sent her to a neuropaediatrician instead of a psychologist for her developmental delay.
I have read great reams of Freud (studied German) and it is so much @%$£ that I find it very hard to believe that people like Ms Covington can still parrot it today with a straight face (nowadays, given better scientific understanding...although I can see why he wrote what he wrote when he did!)

im a psychology student and we are studying freud at the moment,also im a mum to 2 children with an ASD,and i have AS myself, i have had a few arguments discussions about freuds "lets blame the mother for everything" approach,especially the Odiepus and Electra complex,now i can see WHY in his day and age he would have thought like he did but come on,we arent in victorian times any more and its time certain "professionals" caught up.

Amber-totally agree with everything you say,i was quite happy in the playground playing by myself and talking to myself and wasnt interested in wham or duran duran (showing my age now arent i ) and like you couldnt understand why i should be made to chat about pop groups or join in with whatever the latest fad was.

I have also complained to the Jungian analysis organisation which recommends her on its website. I feel rather cross about this

what a bitch! any mother of a special needs child will do her upmost to help her child everyway she can.how many of u have trailied miles fom home looking for the best treatment/care/education aids/ect.anything to lession dc condition and give them the best start possible.hope she says that ,in person to the wrong person (or right person, depending how u think) who punches the git 4 being so ignorant and thoughtless.
