Has anyone else 's AS child started school this/last week?

Dd1 started school last tuesday, she has settled in alot better than i thought she would, i don't think she has made many friends her own age but the older children seem to love her, the only problem is when i pick her up, i have to drag her home moaning and answering me back and then when we get home she is tearful for a while. She says she likes school and has fun at school but she's being a nightmare child once home. Is this what they are all like? I know it must be hard for them starting a new school, meeting new people etc.

I think that this is totally normal, TBH. My dd is pre-dx ASD and she is like this most days after school. Apparently, her behaviour is great at school but literally as soon as she comes out of the school gates she becomes irritable and argumentative. It often ends in tears or even a total meltdown.

I think that kids with AS/ASD have to work really hard to cope with all of the challenges in their daily life and they need to 'let go' when they reach the safety of home.
I'm sure loads of other MNers from SN have similar experiences with their kids - I've been lurking for ages and have read threads about this sort of thing.

I don't really have any advice, I'm afraid, as I'm still new to this. My dd likes to go off alone for half an hour or so when we get home - would this help your dd?

It's early days for her, too, so she could well settle down when she is more familiar with the new people and places. Good luck

DS started reception last tues too.

He let me go without a fuss , had a great time, but was wild when he got home. He was like this each day as soon as he got home, literally tearing around the house at top speed shouting and screeching. He wasn't being badly behaved or anything, just letting off (a lot of) steam

Can i just gatecrash and give you all a massive ((((hug)))) my DD started in Recception last sepetember and i found it one of the most traumatic experiances ever.....however fast forwards tweleve mth and DD has just started (last Tue) in year one, she has had a fantastic week last week and even received a reward from the head .

Got this to come next year, DS just started pre-school this morning. I've heard trampolines are great for the ones who need to physically let off steam and a private cubbyhole is good for those who need to give their brains a rest. Wonder which my DS will be...

Thanks evryone, it nice to know she's not the only one. We have a trampoline (shame the weather isn't great), they are great for letting off steam. I do give her an hour once home to just chill out upstairs with her playmobil which helps a little.

I have all this to go through with dd2(ASD) soon if she gets a place at a special nursery.

DS (autistic) started reception at his special school last Thursday. He loved it and couldn't wait to go back, but his sleep's been really disrupted and he's been a horror all weekend.

TBH he's always been that way when he starts something new, but I think in a few weeks time he'll be fine. I'm sure your DD will be too!
