Choroid plexus cyst and renal pelvic dilatation

Just had 22 week scan with our 3rd child and have discovered baby has these problems. Can anyone help with advice, support, etc. Another scan on Thursday for a further check. If you want email direct [email protected] THANK YOU x

The renal pelvic dilatation is fairly common I think. DS2 had this discovered at a 37 week growth scan and had antibiotics at birth (precaution to prevent any urine infection I believe) and a scan to check it had all cleared when he was a few weeks old. It was all fine and had gone by the time of his scan.

nab, my DS2 had a choroid plexus cyst. It was picked up at the 20 week scan. We were told that they almost always disappear of their own accord, and sure enough when he was rescanned later in the pregnancy (sorry, can't remember how many weeks I was) it had gone. We were never given the impression that a choroid plexus cyst alone is anything to be very worried about.

What have the hospital told you? You sound terribly worried, you poor thing.

The sonographer said he wouldn't have been too concerned if baby just had the renal thing but as he has a cyst too it could be a marker for a more serious problem. At least we only have to wait until Thursday for another scan and hopefully more questions answered. Thanks!!

Oh nab, we had this too, because as well as the cyst, DS2 also had talipes (clubfoot). We were told that neither of them is serious in its own right, but taken together they could be "soft markers" for a chromosomal abnormality called Edwards Syndrome.

Following a more detailed scan, DH and I decided that we would have invasive testing (ie amniocentesis) because I did not feel that I was brave enough to continue the pregnancy and go through labour and delivery knowing there was an increased risk that my DS2 might have such a serious problem. We were both terribly upset by the whole thing (partly I think because DS1 nearly diedi when he was born and we were really hoping for plain sailing second time around). The amniocentesis revealed that the chromosome count was absolutely fine and there was no problem. (He still had talipes, of course, but that was comparatively easy to fix.)

So I do know what you are going through. Please remember that the chances are, overwhelmingly, that there is nothing seriously wrong. Keep posting on this thread and let me know how you are getting on.

Nab, hugs, our baby had two 'soft markers' (dilated renal pelvis and ecogenic foccii) which showed up at 20-wk scan. i know exactly what you are going through, and it is just horrible. i wish you and your partner all the best at this frightening time.

we went for amnio and the chromosomal count was fine, and I had a little boy 4 wks ago today, and he is just perfect (on antibiotics for the renal thing, and awaiting further scan, but it's very common, 1 in 100 babies has it and in most cases the medication does the trick). So yes these things MAY indicate concern, but the consultant who did our amnio told us beforehand that the vast majority of babies who show up with two soft markers are, in fact, fine in the end.

Great names!! baked potato and dinosaur. I used my initials so wasn't very imaginative. I am feeling quite relaxed about the whole thing really as we know we are having the baby anyway so won't have to make that terrible decision and also won't agree to an amino so that's another decision to leave. I just hate the way the medical profession drop these bombshells and then leave you to fill in the gaps. If they don't know the answer they should either get someone who does or say nothing.

Good to hear than nab. I must admit, in retrospect I am rather amazed that I decided to have amnio and had decided with my DS3 that if the scan showed up anything similar I would not make the same decision (like you, I knew I was keeping the baby no matter what).

In a way it is very annoying - I felt I would have been far better off if the scanning technology hadn't been good enough to pick up the cyst - I would have spared lots of unnecessary worry and angst!

Well, still feel worried but better after speaking to ARC. The hospital didn't help. The kidneys looked okay but she said they would need rechecking as it may only show up at certain times. The cyst is still there. Have to be rescanned in 4 weeks. It is just they tell you things that are worrying and then say oh, everything will be fine. It doesn't matter either way as we want babba but it would be nice to have a worry free pregnancy. Would love to know what that is like...

Nab - I'm going to look for a piece I read on line when I was pg with dd (scan showed echogenic bowel at 20 weeks - soft marker) It was by a sonography prof who explained how the abnormalities found in scans very often resolve themselves by birth. It was called 'Sonography or how to terrify pregnant women unecessarily' - or something like that. I found it reassuring at the time.

When I look at my lovely DS2 now and think of the risk that I might have lost him due to the amnio, my heart skips a beat.

Feel really fed up with everyone saying they hope things work out with the next scan. Feels like they are saying a baby with problems is a problem. We want this baby whatever his problems and it doesn't matter to us if he isn't "perfect". Next scna March 24th.

just out of interest reading this thread. without scaring you nab our ds was born with a chroid plexus papilloma - very rare brain tumour, benign though, and totally different to cyst. just found your thread interesting. i always read anything to do with choroid plexus things.
ds is fine medically now just developmentally delayed about year but we woudlnt change him for the world. got dd in way in 2 wks time and had scanned very carefully and regularly it make sure her brain looks ok whilst in pgcy.

Hi nab, I have a little dd of 3 who has Down Syndrome, nothing got picked up in my scans and I chose not to have any additional tests.
After a very quick, intensive, but absolutely wonderful birth, I had a beautiful little girl, but just not the "one" I was expecting. Wouldn't change a thing about her, she is my special, wonderful girl and her having DS is just a small part of the wonderful, bright, little girl that she is.
It is more than likely that these worries will be just that, in a way it's technology jumping too far ahead of us. But whatever happens, you know what you want and your baby will be nothing more than that, your beautiful baby.
I can't imagine how you feel, but please try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy!

It is such a mixture of feelings. Preg. 1 did everything by the book and din't eat or do anything I shouldn't. DS born by emergency section and nearly lost him. 2nd preg, ate too much cake and was nowhere near as conscientious. DD has had probs but is fine as of last week. Preg 3, lost at 6 weeks, wasn't sure was ready. Preg 4, probs now, eaten stuff I shouldn't, nervous about another baby and how I will cope. No one has said this baby will be wanted even with problems, apart from my best pal from school who lives too blooming far away.
