Just read about the so-called "nappy curriculum" attainment targets for toddlers. Are they all mad?

So glad DD isn't at school in the UK. Sorry for those of you whose kids are. What ARE the govt playing at! Some of those targets wouldn't be achieved by NT kids, let alone SN ones.
Just seems crazy to me!

think there are 'targets' to be reached in creches (some) which start at 6-9mths and 12mths, etc. things like: rolling over, babbling, pointing, making a mark on paper etc. i think... unless im wrong?

Good nurseries should pick up on all these things anyway so it's silly to turn it into a 'curriculum' DS2 started nursery younger than we would have wanted ideally but we needed extra time to care for DS1 (ASD). I get regular reports about his progress, they do know about DS1 so maybe they are trying to re assure me but I sometimes wonder what would have happened if DS1 had been in nursery at that age

The learning targets related to writing/literacy are going to be reviewed as even experts have said they are wrong!

I agree that UK education begins to early in too formal a manner. There are other EU countries start their dcs schooling much much later and acheive much much better results. The govenrment instead of looking at this and taking it as a good example seem to just feel the need for more targets, tests and reports on our little ones.

From what I can gather babies and toddlers are not expected to reach those targets in that time, ie that the nurseries will be reprimanded if 15 month old Ethelburga isn't walking or waving, they're just there as guidelines, so that if a young child does appear to be delayed they can be kept an eye on.
Of course, some nurseries do what the first one we sent Ds1 to did. Which was to tick the boxes relating to babies several months younger than him (which he still didn't tick a lot of the boxes) .

I would hope that this would help nurseries to more effectively pick up on any developmental problems or SN earlier (and hopefully act appropriately). DS attended a nursery who was not brilliant at paperwork, and not brilliant with SN - hopefully this sort of requirement might help nurseries become more SN aware.
