What happens at the annual review in special school?

Today is ds parent consultation evening. I wrote to ask about the annual review (which is slightly overdue) and got a reply back that that it will be at the the consultation meeting with the teacher for each child. I have not received any reviews (SALT, EP, Paed etc) and obviously it will just be us and the teacher! Is this how its done in special school (excellent school). I am not expecting any major change to the statement to be needed other than to include his recent Dx of ASD. (but if they havent got it in writting as we have not either perhaps not).
Perhaps they only do a formal review if the statement meeds a major change or at transisions. (All kids have statements at DS school)
Consultations are 10 minutes only so its a rush at the best of times.
I have read his statement and made notes! Anything else I should do?

Anyone? I have read the rules re: statement reviews and feel really confused. His review was due end of June. Do special schools not do reviews?

Hiya
not sure If I'll be much help, but will get this nearer the top for you

My dd goes to a special school, and has a review each year. I'm not sure if it's the school who organizes it or the LEA, but I wouldn't have thought that they'd do the review at the parents meeting, especially as it's only 10mins.

Usually takes aprox 1 hour, they go through targets for the year, acheivements etc and at the end show 'record of acheivement' a folder with work that dd has done. Sometimes the child would actually be bought in to show this at the end, but seeing as that would not work for dd, (as she would want to come home!) it is there already.

Least you can bring up that your sons review is overdue at the Parents meeting and take it from there.
Good luck
x

Thanks Geri! In the end rang LEA who said school should write to me with 2 weeks notice and a copy of proposed amendments. Feel happier now! Was worried we would have it thrown at us and not have time to read anything ( i need time to think!).

Ours is pretty much the same as Geri2 and usually takes about an hour. The school send the 'report' from all the teachers/salt out to us before and we go through it on the day. The head teacher and class teacher both usually attend and there is a section for ds to say what he has liked/disliked this year which we fill in with him and the school also do with him which we also look at on the day. Our head wanted to make a minor ammendment to ds' statement (to make it a bit more positive for once!) so she'd filled in the relevant section of the review to send to LEA but she did tell me that they don't like to change statements unless it's really nec. or a transition thing.

And it is def. an annual thing regardless of statement ammendments - although they all tend to be done at the same time of year so although ds got his statement in the Feb. his review is always in the summer.

Aww glad you got some answers.

good luck for tonight

good luck for tonight. For a formal annual review of SEN statement, the parents have the opportunity to contribute, the child's views are sought, along with detailed tracking from school. All of this is collated with reports from outside agencies and circulated to all who will attend the review at least 2 weeks before the meeting.

So hopefully it's an 'end of year' school review, rather than a statement review tonight.

Thanks! It seems ds school do not do formal statement reviews except in transition years, so it was like a normal slightly longer IEP/parent consultation.
So a worry out the way for now!
