7-month wait for UC Decision Maker (Child Element/DLA)

Hi everyone, back in April 2026, I reported a change of circumstances because my daughter was awarded DLA (10 month prior). This means we should be entitled to the Disabled Child Addition and the Carer Element.

My claim was sent to a Decision Maker to decide on Mandatory Reconsideration regarding backdating the claim.

It has now been almost 7 months. I keep leaving messages in my journal, but they just reply saying 'Your claim is with the Decision Maker, no timescale can be given.'

We are really suffering financially because of this ridiculous delay. Has anyone else experienced a wait this long for a child element/carer DLA backdating decision? What can I do to force the DWP to act? What steps to take next would be hugely appreciated. Thank you!

You can make a complaint.

As well as making a complaint, I would involve your MP at this point. They seem to enable to get decisions looked at more quickly especially when you’ve been asking for updates. Waiting 7 months for a backdating decision is simply madness

Thanks for the advice. I hadn't thought about contacting my MP, but that is a brilliant idea. 7 months of waiting really is madness and the whole ordeal made me feel like I'm under their mercy dealing with a shady organization not a responsible government office. Hopeful that getting the MP involved will finally prompt them to look at the decision.

Thank you for the advice, @hibernatinghedgehog. I did made a complaint to the DWP about this unacceptable delay recently I'm yet to receive any response.
