Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Do NT children routinely give names to their toy animals/cuddly toys?

Stupid question, but it's driving me crazy, that whenever well meaning people (even family who are aware of his speech issues) see DS with one of his animals, they ask him what it's name is! (driving me crazy as DS then struggles to give an appropriate answer) Is this some important language or social skill stage that I should be working on with him?

My ds, NT, has never named any of his countless soft toys. No idea why, but it clearly doesn't bother him.

ah I see, thanks cyber. DS would label his tellytubbys/beanies etc with their character name iyswim - not quite sure how much was labelling as opposed to sharing them.

very interesting thread answers, as it's not clearcut at all.

When I was a Sunday School teacher and some children would bring a toy in and when I briefly had work experience in a nursery I would ask the children what the names of the toys were and loads of them would look at me blankly over it.

I was one for three years TC . On account of my parents didn't give us an option as to whether or not we went to church on a Sunday and so this was one of the few ways I could get out of going to the services for most of the time.

DS2 has a very precious bear called, guess what "bear" that he was given when very young, he always looks puzzled when asked about bear's name, it seems a stupid question to him. His bother has a giant toy horse called "Brian", not sure where that came from.

I mean BROTHER, not bother, that was def. a freudian slip as DS1 is being a PITA at the moment.

My DS (NT, now 7) named everything, but usually with names like 'polar bear' or 'snake', although we do have a 'Nesta' (a bat) and Claude the lobster. His favourite is a baby doll, called 'baby' but he hides him when his friends come around in case they take the mickey!

I used to name everything! I used to play "school" and name imaginary children too...

I also had a nickname for many people.
