Surfing at Bigbury - for those with ASD - September

Some friends did this last year and apparently it was brilliant. I can't see it working with ds1 (especially at Bigbury- VERY fixed routine) but am probably going to give it a go. Apparently lots of helpers, all very enthusiastic, worked for kids across the spectrum last year etc etc. I only heard good feedback.

Wow - photos are amazing! I think we might wait a few years for this for DS2, who still gets fairly traumatised at the swimming pool - but I can see your DS1 doing it. We might come and watch if you do - I am missing the Venus Cafe

I think he's really unlikely to do it tbh. I might cancel. He has no concept of surfing and hasn't been in the sea since ???? At Bigbury in particular he just has a fixed route he wants to get round.....

I read about last year's event in a paper somewhere and for me it was like one of those signs, all roads lead to Devon sort of thing. I love being in the water (I surf v badly) and when I saw that they intended this to be an annual event I thought how I really want DS1 to participate one day. I think he's still a bit too little though but we'll definitely be there on the day. Thanks for the link!

There were 4 year olds doing it last year DIL. The waves were little last year. Apparently the organisers are brilliant. It's the only reason I've even thought about trying with ds1.

I have a video of a friend's son doing it aged 4 last year - I can ask her if I can send it to you.

Lots of people were on high's last year. I think the chance of ds1 doing it is somewhere less than 1% (unless he really kicks off with the Light on Literacy stuff ) but I guess I should give him the opportunity. It did seem better organised and more accessible than many supposedly ASD events which is why I thought we could try.

I don't think they could swim. It's done in shallow water- the video I saw was shallow water 2 (maybe 3?) people either side of the board. They steadied the board and held the child then ran alongside then let go of the board iyswim.
