Social Housing on grounds of child needing own room

Can anyone share their experiences on applying for social housing on the grounds of needing a bigger property for their SN child?

I applied for social housing in Jan this year as my 7 year ols Asd, Adhd and sensory Process Disorder child. He has started to hurt himself more and now lashing out at his almost 2 year old sister.
As you can imagine she is quite loud and not much I can do about that but shares a room with my son who in frustration and upset hurts himself when he can't deal with her noise or her distrupting his sleep.

I applied for social housing because he's now started pinching and pushing and lashing out at her when overloaded. I believe he needs his own room and space because there is only so much I can do to prevent her from making too much noise. The ear defenders just don't seem to satisfy his needs and he also has started getting upset with her being near him.

Just wanted to know did anyone have any advice, not just on what I can do to help but also their experience on wait times in a similar situation for housing.

Thank you in advance.

It depends on what area you live in, but some can still wait years and years.

Have you considered a Disabled Facilities Grant in your current property?

Has DS had a home OT assessment and a sensory OT assessment?

It's a nightmare. I honestly wish I could just afford to get a bigger private rented property but rent is just ridiculous these days!

I have never heard of a disability grant but will look into it.

He's still currently waiting for a meeting with a OT I have spoken to them on the phone and attended some of the online workshops for the relevant areas of help for him but they told me there is a long wait for the OT because there are alot of referrals.

Literally just the waiting game. It's difficult because he seems to be getting more frustrated the older he gets and of course I'm learning with him so sometimes I don't know where to even begin on how to help him. Other parents online have been life savers because I get more help and information from them than in official channels.

Thank you for responding!

Definitely investigate a DFG.

If you receive UC and DS receives MRC or HRC DLA, are you receiving the right housing element? If DS is unable to share a bedroom and receives MRC or HRC DLA, you are entitled to the 3 bed rate rather than the 3 bed rate you would otherwise be entitled to. If you aren’t receiving UC, check if you are eligible. And if DS doesn’t get MRC or HRC DLA, apply or request a change of circumstances.
