We started up private SALT for DD again last week. She is 6.5 and has DS. The SALT we are using are specailist in DS and mentioned new research showing that just like the hips, shoulders etc can be hypotonic, so can the jaw which,as the child develops, causes issues in articulation.

Chewy tubes were mentioned and a step by step program but we are awaiting more info at the next session or when we get out first report.

I have found this but wondered if anyone has any experience or knowledge of the program.

Thank you.

dingle - dd1 has not had one - we did use chewy tube for a while but she seemed to hate it.

There was a write up in one of our journals about the t-shaped one. It was rated quite highly.

It sounds interesting - I might chat with our private salt about it too.

What our therapist said was that the jaw alignment is often out. She asked DD to bite onto a chewy tube and apparently she bites with her lower jaw out and slightly to one side....as did the other 2 children in her group.

DD has never really used anything like this before but the red t shaped one has been suggested for the children in our group.

I haven't read it in depth, but the program looks very much step by step and although I am told progress may be slow and the child must build up slowly and accurately before moving on...the results are supposed to be very good. I do have a lot of faith in our therapist, we have known her for almost 4 years now and she does specialise in DS!!
