Im very concerned… my 3 year old who is reffered for asd (long story they didnt refer him when he was 2 and now everything is delayed) was a very good eater ate all his meals and snack. Since beginning of october he started to loose interest in all his food and was living on muffin and milk for 2 weeks. The past 5 days he has not eaten any form of solid… just milk. He refuses water, pedeasure juice… i contracted gp they sent me a&e to which the a&e said why are you here your gp needs to do referal we cannot help you as observations show he is fine. He has lost 500gram of weight. Im concerned because he seems less active as he usually does and just wants to lie, the dr said they will make referral to the peads but they can reject or see him.. im just lost, sad, i cry everyday because he just doesn’t want to look at the food and keeps pushing it away. He is soo hungry but refuses.
Any asd mums out there please can you advise. I have read into sensory issues with food but these are foods he has eaten his whole life… he has no diagnosis and im worried once they get medical part out of the way will the provide support with behavioural…

Have a look at ARFID.

Did A&E do bloods? If not, I would request those. It is worth reading the ‘medical emergencies in eating disorders’ guidance so you know what should be looked at and what should be done at each stage.

If you have one locally you could ask the GP to refer directly to the paediatric assessment unit to bypass A&E. And you are really concerned you can go back to A&E. Don’t let the previous experience put you off.

Previously eating the food doesn’t mean it isn’t a sensory need. Has DS had a sensory OT assessment.

In the meantime, are you using jersey milk? Will DS drink flavoured milk? Would he drink a milkshake?

Hi, no other advice but definitely ask for bloods just to rule out any medical issues. Really hope this ends soon xx

I had this with dd 3, she was only drinking milk and eating yogurt and thats it, resisting all meals. I gave her a meal stimulant 2 hours before meals and she is eating better. i tried Jersey milk but it made her v constipated. so back to normal milk, fruits in between, she loves sausages, so i got her 93 % meat ones, beans, and she is eating better now. I used to cry all the time worrying about this but is it better now.
