DD's grommets op tomorrow--scared and excited

I know it's a simple op, but it'll be DD's first GA (she has had sedation before when she has had her MRIs). I'm a bit scared about that.
But am also excited about discovering what kind of hearing loss (if any) she will be left with, and what effect this will have on her speech (she has none at the moment and doesn't really even babble). We've been told she may have some sensorineural loss but none of the audiology tests have been able to ascertain how much as she's 'difficult to test' (a category I am sure most 20-month-olds fall into).

good luck Arabica! I can't wait for ds's appointment to come through so that we can get on with getting either a hearing aid or grommets, it would be so great to get speech really going wouldn't it?

ds had a GA when he was 15 months old and it was absolutely fine.

ooh good luck - my DS had grommets at 10 months then at 24 months. after first operation he couldn't stop clapping his hands - obviously couldn't hear the clapping sound before so didn't understand why everyone was so keen for him to do it

his speech both times improved dramatically within weeks (we were lucky that it was we picked it up early)

Emkana, here's hoping you won't need any hearing aids for DS. Am sick of putting dd's back on 40 million times a day--and I'm not sure it ever made any difference anyway, as she didn't show any significant interest in speech-like sounds whether wearing it or not!

Good luck, we were in the same position in October, it was great to get some definite answers about dd3s hearing. She's now a pretty good hearing aid wearer as they are accurately adjusted to her hearing loss. I think that made a huge difference. The whole anaesthetic thing always scares me but dd3 was absolutely fine and thankfully blissfully unaware of all our worrying! She is going for her MRI and skin biopsy today which means another ga so I will be thinking of you and sending hugs!

Best Wishes for dd tomorrow Arabica - my dd who is 3.5 is having grommets in both ears on May 9th - I'm hoping it will have a dramatic impact for her as at the moment her speech is quite affected. She also has very poor balance and is covered in bruises so looks a real state! the doctor thinks this will also improve with the grommets. I hope it all goes well - let us know how dd gets on.

I hope the grommets op is a sucess. The only advice I can give is to be really careful to stop the ears getting wet. In some parts of the country you can buy custom made swim moulds from audiology. Or failing that ear bandits or putty buddies are good for keeping ear dry.

arabica - dd1 is on her second set of grommets and it was amazing to see how much more she 'heard' and how quickly the clarity of her speech improved.

I was nervy the night before and got some good reassurance here.

Take a mag or a newspaper for when she's having the op!

How did it go Arabica?

Hi, it went well--anaesthetic was very scary and it went against all my instincts to leave her to be operated on by complete strangers. She was distressed when she woke up but once she'd allowed us to give her a bottle she quickly recovered and staggered around exploring the ward until they let us go home.
Unfortunately, we didn't get the ABR results so I still don't know how much hearing loss, if any, she has been left with--finding out on Monday. She certainly seems a little more alert to noise than before, but perhaps not quite as different as I had hoped/expected.
BTW one of the nurses was a real cow. Think I'll post separately about it.

glad to hear the op when well. Dd1 was freaked out both times she had the op and came around. I had to go and be with her in recovery as she was hysterical.

Yes, my DD cried for a few minutes after coming round, then she slept for about half an hour and she was OK. Another poster on here, who is a paed nurse, told me that's really common.

My instincts were all screwed up about leaving her too - lioness/cub thing kicked in, even though mt head told me, it was the right thing to do!

I'm sure DD is hearing better than before--she keeps turning her head when people come upstairs, something she never did before. She also started dancing when I put on a CD and looked very shocked when her toy phone (which rings very quietly) started making a sound.
These reactions never happened when she had her hearing aid on.

Thats really good Arabica, sounds like her hearing aids weren't set correctly! Looking good for her results tomorrow, fingers crossed.
