Dyspraxic DD nobody interested can I ask for some advice please?

My dd (8) and I have had a long battle trying to convinvce proffesionals that something is wrong .
We finally saw a OT about 3 months ago who now says she is showing all the classic signs of dyspraxia (just what I said )

School are so unhelpful and unbelievable they make promises to help her and then never bother until I go in and kick up a stink I have been asking the senco to contact me for a week now (even writing it on her school -home book) and still no contact

I can not take her out of school as she has 4 other siblings who attend the school and I can not be at two schools at teh same time.

I have been told by the HT that she will never get a statement .

I am at my wits end I really can not face another shouty meeting with false promises and lies meanwhile my dd falls further behind and as she gets older her condition is getting more profound .

Does anyone have any advice on what I can say to school to make them listen ?

I think if the school are being so unhelpful that it is an idea now to go to your GP with a list of all the things you have noticed about her and how you feel that it impacts on her at school, at home and socially. Your GP can refer her to a paediatrician to be properly assessed.

As Tclanger says, she needs to have an IEP. Things like a sloping writing board etc can make a big difference. The important thing though is that the school accept that she does have a problem that needs support so that you can all work on keeping her confidence high. Parent partnership and IPSEA for some support would also be a good idea I think. Good luck, I hope things improve.

My ds has dyspraxia, have you contacted the dyspraxia foundation or the dyscovery centre for advice they are both good....
I would ask for a meeting with the senco and ht and tell them what you would like to happen, with my ds he had his statement already as he was deaf,,, he had the support ie the ot, physio etc but not the "label of dyspraxic" on his statement.... kick up a stink and go for it big time

I asked at the last ,eeting where her IEP was and the HT looked at me blankly .
Also the last eeting I was told that my DD's problems had gone under the radar because the school had been through a difficult time !!!

I am going to arrange a meeting for next week and demand they stop treating her as if she were a naughty child and take notice of her problems I am also going to contact the Parent partnership so thankyou for the link

I don't understnad why it is so difficult to get the help my dd so clearly needs it is just so frustrating .

Many schools would not recognise dyspraxia even if it kicked them in the shins. It is also not mentioned at teacher training college.

PP may be worth a go but you need to bear in mind that these people are funded by the LEA. Therefore they may well tow the party line and thus may not be all that helpful overall.

Dyspraxia Foundation and the dyscovery centre in Cardiff are well worth contacting.

The problem I had was that even though the help was in place for my ds i didnt have the name dyspraxia on the statement so if for some reason he had moved school i would have had to start again with the fight,,, he changed school when he was seven and i was in the middle of a fight for naming then so i carried it on i had so much research and paperwork with me when i went to his annual review plus a firm letter from his hearing consultant before it went on the statement,it wasnt the school it was the lea... the other reason i kicked up a fuss is because i have dyspraxia too. I was always told oh your so clumsy etc etc and given a really hard time at school... I have failed my driving test six times now and have given up.... they do say that people with dyspraxia find it hard to drive and if im truthful its the way other people drive that put me off now!!!

Its damn nigh impossible to see the word dyspraxia or dyslexia on a Statement document. LEA and many schools don't want to acknowledge such problems on grounds of cost; well they certainly do nothing in terms of proper class help for these children in my son's school.
