My DS (2) is on the ASD pathway but referrals on the NHS are over a year.

I have b,een doing some research and think he would benefit from Occupational therapy and speech and language.
He has difficulties with sensory issuesvery restricted diet, and various communication issues (hand leading, minimal speech, no pointing) and struggles a lot socially. He has a lot of meltdowns.

I was thinking to take out private health insurance and try and refer and claim via this - is this possible?

Or, has anyone paid out for these therapies and what was the experience?

If you don’t already have private health insurance, many won’t cover existing conditions, so you would need to check the policy. Not all cover neurodevelopmental conditions or therapies such as SALT and OT either.

Funding ongoing OT and SALT can be costly.

I have DC who receive SALT and OT from private professionals but they are funded via their EHCPs.

Thank you I will check the policy.

How does your child find OT / SALT, is it helpful?

SALT and OT, including sensory OT, is helpful for my 2 DSs who receive it.

Seems the policy I have is a basic level / not covered. Has anyone else got any experience of therapies being funded by private medical insurance successfully?
