DS2's first morning at mainstream school today

The special school has been doing a gradual hand over process to the m/s 1:1 this week and today is his first full morning. He looked very anxious and tried to follow me out when I left the classroom but they haven't rung me so far so hopefully he's OK.

Can you guess that I am pacing round unable to settle to anything? nervous

I so know how you feel - I was the same on Ds's first session at school. I still feel a bit jumpy when he goes now, but much much better than that first time. I also figure - he has as much legal right to be there as every other kid, under the mainstream inclusion law of this land, plus he is allowed to be autistic, ie I don't have to worry every time he doesn't behave just like the other kids. Well we're back and it seems to have gone OK. I think his 1:1 was more nervous than he was - she' s very young and inexperienced but seems to be very quick to learn and with the right sort of face for DS2 - very smiley!

Apparently he did some mark making, played chase with another child, did 'wake and shake' and played in the home corner (it's set out as a hospital atm with a BED - DS2 will spend all morning lying on that if they let him ) He also used some speech (which is good as he usually goes quiet in new situations). Inevitably it involved asking for food! So all in all a good start - he seemed happy and calm when I picked him up.

Early days - and of course they're not pushing him on anything yet. It worried me a bit when they said he'd 'sat with the other children for the literacy session'. The thing is, he WILL sit, staring into space and with all the teacher talk going straight over his head. It doesn't mean he's getting anything out of it. He already knows how to be compliant! (I think he's worked out he gets less hassle that way ) But I still intend to get ABA in there by hook or by crook. I have several cunning plans.....

glad it went OK! I feel exactly the same way about comments like that - oh he joined in with the group activities OK - um there's a big difference between being physically and mentally present .
