How did you potty train your autistic child?

Just that... ds is 3+2 months. He's being assessed to determine his diagnosis but suspected autism. One of his main struggles are sensory related. His language is behind for his age but we are good at understanding him. We've managed to convince him to sit on the potty for about 2 seconds with bare bottom (the cold sensations bother him I think) with sweets bribery. We've tried to pop him on the potty when he's about to poo/wee but it ends in tears. Where do we go from here?

We used the Oh crap potty training method over the summer when ds was 3.5. It worked well for us though took longer than the book said. He didn’t have any big sensory issues though.

If you have the money, try a few different options - my DD hates the little plastic pottys but shes fine with this

We have found that song association works really well - theres a book called 'Poo Poo Bum Bum wee wee' that DD thinks is hilarious and as she is quite a visual learner, looking at the pictures she started to connect the dots a bit.

We went straight to the toilet with a seat insert and step, tanked DS up with drink and sat him there until he weed so he knew the sensation. Truthfully, we gave him a tablet to get him to sit there initially.

Once DS could wee on command, we used a timer and sent him every hour, gradually increasing the time interval, then fading out the timer altogether once he started to take himself off to the loo in between times.

Poos are still a work in in progress...
