There has been some nice good news coverage here in the USA about a young woman with severe autism who has learned to type independently. Here are three articles:

Article 1:Article about Carly Fleishman

Article 2:Carly Fleishman Answers Questions

Article 3:Carly Fleishman's Parents Answer Questions

There's video there, too.

Will have a look at those, ta.

DS3 is pretty much non-verbal (was up to sentences but lost it again ) and is ASD, he's showing signs of a quite stunning gift with the PC- amazing what he can do! Only skill he doesn't have yet is reading / typing as he's not receiving an education at the moment (long story), ut I would say he will catch on to that quite quickly.

I had a look and recommend others do too. Some fab footage there, it gives us hope!

Thanks interesting. I'm re-reading Lucy Blackman's (aslo severely autistic, non-verbal but can type) book at the moment and the descriptions about impulse control etc are very similar. IIRC Lucy reckoned that ABA would have made her worse. She learned via facilitated communication but now types independently.

We're trying to teach DS1 using informative pointing/Halo type mix.

The thing that strikes me about her is that she's able to focus very well on the keyboard. In the past however many months we've been doing this ds1 has been able to focus that well twice. Once to type out his name after he saw a boy using a letterboard. I suspect ABA has reallly helped with that focussing ability.

I'll show him the video tomorrow and see if he responds in the same way as he did to Dov (the boy using the letterboard),

She's right about being more aware than suspected. i'll never forget the time I didn't understand something ds1 was trying to get through to me and I said 'it would be so much easier if you could talk' And he howled and howled.
