I wouldn't...but who's only getting £48 a week? Confused

PersonalClown · 08/02/2008 19:06

£48 is Carers allowance isn't it?
Mine is going up to £50-something in April.

Isn't it funny how parents with 'normal' children can sit at home on benefits without any fuss, yet as a single parent I have to go to the Job centre to justify why I don't work.
I'd love to, just can't find one with suitable hours.

Sorry off on one of those rants. It's been one of those days and chocolate withdrawl is kicking in.

needmorecoffee · 08/02/2008 19:10

me me me. Its 17p an hour isn't it (maths not my strongest point)
If I dumped dd in resintial care it would cost them 2 grand a WEEK as she needs 24 hour specialist care plus nursing care.

aefondkiss · 08/02/2008 19:13

it is beyond awful, I really think you should be getting a living wage, if you have to be a full time carer, it isn't really a choice you have made.... but I am not sure what you can do about it?

2shoes · 08/02/2008 19:14

ah knew you would get it
when i think one night of respite costs about £150 for dd. tis a joke.

Ds would cost about £1000. He'd need almost constant supervision (no sense of danger/fear) needs to be told when to do things, someone to translate! etc.

bullet123 · 08/02/2008 19:15

There's some messed up priorities going on . £48 is a slap in the face, really.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 08/02/2008 19:32

Tis bloody crap.
And don't forget it's a taxable benefit so 17p gross not net.

daisy5678 · 08/02/2008 19:49

Sorry to have been thick. Yes, it's shocking. In some countries, parents are paid a wage to stay at home with young children...a proper wage.

needmorecoffee · 08/02/2008 20:21

mind you, in some countries there's no care for children like ours and no benefits unless you can pay for it.

daisy5678 · 08/02/2008 20:35

True. Whenever I think about the Millenium Dome and the money that was spent on that, I do get so angry about what our Government believes in in terms of worthy causes though.

deeeja · 08/02/2008 20:46

Yes, is disgusting.
My local authority has complained that it has overspent this year, and gone beyond budget. What is worse, apparently most of the money has gone on SEN, well no-one I know has seen that in real terms. Now, apparently, they have got to dip into their savings to meet the overspend! SAVINGS! We are talking millions! How did they save?!!!
They should ask a mother of sen children to work out their accounts, no money for lavish lunches, meeting over copious amounts of alcohol, hmmmmmmm
