Mainstream schools in south Devon for ASD child

I could really do with some advice. My son is 11 and has ASD and DCD. He is probably what used to be called ‘Aspergers’- super bright verbally but finds writing difficult, very socially awkward, eccentric, lots of sensory needs, finds school environment difficult.

He has just started Year 7 at a school in Cornwall but is having a horrendous time with bullies and with the school environment. The saving grace is that he does have two friends on his level who are supporting him really well.

My husband has just got a new job in Plymouth so we are thinking of moving so husband doesn’t have to commute. If anyone has any experience of the South Devon schools and what they are like for kids with ASD I would love to hear it.

We have looked at:
South Dartmoor Community College
King Edward VI Community College
Totnes Progressive School

and will be visiting:
Coombe Dean (Plymouth)
Kingsbridge Community College

Any thoughts or experiences about these schools or others are welcomed.

I feel so awful for taking him away from his friends but he’s having an awful time at the school. Moving will be so difficult for him I just want to get the right school and friendship group for him.

Thanks so much.

Hi, I saw this post from last year and wondered how you got on as we are in a very similar situation and looking at those same schools! Would love any insights you might have. 🙏🏽 d
