My 20 month old DS is developing within expected ranges, no particular suspicions of SN but have some neurodiversity in the family. I'm not looking for any diagnosis, just curious if any of your neurodiverse children have issues with shiny things.
Several times recently DS has had an intense freak out / meltdown over seeing something shiny that he doesn't like. At one point he saw me wearing black pumps with a shiny silver 'jewel' on them, and was distraught. After the third meltdown in the same day I just ripped the jewels off and he was fine! Since then he's been reacting similarly to finding a piece of shiny table confetti on the floor, or shiny ribbons. He doesn't want to touch them, wants me to put them in the bin, but even if I do so calmly the whole process is quite traumatic for him.
It really feels like some kind of sensory sensitivity, but one that I never would have imagined! If anyone has experienced similar, did you learn what it was in particular that seemed to trigger it, or any particular strategies for handling the upset in a situation where you can't just make the trigger go away?
Thanks!
