Different sex child and no disabled loos

My ds7 has issues with continence and I am starting to find a use for disabled loos rather than cramming into a small cubicle. Some of the places we go the disabled loo is in the women's (and presumably men's) loos. Is it common practice to take an older child into the "wrong" loo if this need presents. I am assuming it is, as there would be no choice, but I wouldn't want to make a tense situation worse in the moment.

Thanks

I try to plan stopping at places where there is a unisex disabled toilet/changing places toilet, but if that isn’t possible or DS needs to go urgently we go into the women’s toilets. He isn’t safe to be left to go into the men’s alone.
