I know that title probably sounds ridiculous but I worry for my son so much.

He talks, he just absolutely DOES NOT communicate at all and also doesn’t understand 75% of things you say to him. So for instance putting on his shoes, coat, washing himself, telling him not to run in to a road etc he just does not understand at all. He is very much a stereotypical case of being in his own world.

All week I’ve been told by nursery how he doesn’t want to get involved with group activities, doesn’t want to sit down at story/singing time etc and it just makes me feel sad 🙁 I’ve had the nursery curriculum come through today and as I read it I just find myself making a mental checklist of all the things I know my son will struggle with or point blank will not do.

I would like to add the nursery staff all know about him undergoing a diagnosis and how he’s seeing a SALT, we had a meeting with them and a telephone conversation before he started and voiced our concerns.

I know it’s only been a short while but will this come in time? I’m very new to the world of ASD so please go easy on me 😩

Before he starts school you'll need to get an EHCP in place to help him thrive. I would also start looking at local specialist schools, because you may suddenly find the lock that his particular type of key fits into.

How old is your lo? It's very early days with nursery for the staff to be discussing all the things he isn't doing etc imo. It can take a long time for some children to settle in. You mentioned staff are already aware of his needs so it shouldn't be a surprise if he isn't mirroring what the other children do. Once they get to know him more they should be focusing on him and not comparing.

Getting the right support is invaluable. You will get there I'm sure xx
