My DS is 7, having just been recently diagnosed with ASD. His psychologist said he has an aspergers / HFA profile. He also has ADHD traits and we are awaiting an assessment. He was given his diagnosis because of his poor social communication skills and his sensory seeking behaviour. He attends mainstream school and needs little support, for example, some prompting to stay on task, but does not have a 1:1 or EHCP yet. He is very intelligent - above average across the board. He doesn't have any meltdowns or aggression, and any emotional outbursts can be quickly managed (it takes maybe 30 seconds at most to calm him down). He has bundles of empathy, especially when people are outwardly hurt. He is also not bothered about routine and doesn't have repetitive behaviours. His only early sign was his extreme intelligence, he met all other developmental milestones (rolling, babbling, crawling, talking, toileting).
Overall, we live a normal life. We go on holidays, to the park, cinema, theatre, out for dinner etc. I am a single parent and since his diagnosis, I have started to worry about the possibility of him becoming violent. I've read so many threads on here about children with ASD who become increasingly violent as they got older. It worries me as a single parent. DS has never shown violent characteristics, but has anyones DC suddenly become violent? I'm so worried about puberty / the teenage years, as I've read and heard that it so commonly falls apart there.
I've also recently met someone and we've discussed the possibility of having another DC together. My DS has said lots of times he would like a sibling and I know it wouldn't phase him from a sensory or routine perspective. I am also interested in hearing from people who've gone on to have more DC, when they have one diagnosed as ASD.
