what are my chances of getting a SN car seat for dd2 from family fund?

dd2 is overly tall/heavey for her age. she doesnt have special needs as far as we know (she is being assessed next month for her growth), but has outgrown car seats with harnesses already at just over 2yrs old. she is now in a high back booster. I had a look at the Britax elite the other week, and if dd2 grows another 2inches (which can happen very quickly with dd2) thn she will be too tall for it. i am completely at a loss at what to do. she isnt safe in her high back booster as she still falls asleep in the car as she is so young. she does get DLA high rate care as she has eczema and a few issues with walking, general clumsiness.
We have applied to the FF, and am awaiting confirmation of the application and am hoping a representaive comes round soon (original online application made over the summer but they have no record of it), but am wondering if they will fund a car seat that isnt needed for SN but due to her size?

they said to us that we needed written confirmation from someone like ot, for ds to get a car seat, even a sn one, because a car seat is not specifically for disabled children. When we gave them the confirmation they said yes, so we went out and bought it, ds2 couldn't wait as long as the 3 months they had quoted for a reply, and then they refused the claim because we had paid up front! Took a bit of argy bargy before they paid up, but they did eventually. However, they couldn't really argue the case, because they had said we could have one with medical proof, and he needed it for his physical posture ( his back was too curved in a typical seat). I think it would be a lot harder to get one based on size alone, although you do receive dla high care rate, so that should go in your favour. I wouldn't be too otpimistic though, sorry. Good luck anyway.

i don't. What about one that starts off as a 5pointer and can be changed to a 3 point belt later? Ds1 has a quite big one , we got it from mothercare, he is only just growing out of it aged 6 (on sat)

have looked at the high back boosters with straps but dd2 is already at the weight when we'd have to remove the straps. she is the size of 4-5yr olds, weighs around 40lb already. thats why i was hoping the elite would be a good buy for her. but after checking it in the shop she only has 2inches on growth before she'd be too big for it. ATM she slumps in a high back booster and if she falls asleep ends up all over the back of the car as the adult belt doesnt hold her in place.

this isnt a booster, it's a proper car seat, not one that splits up iyswim. I'll see if i can find a link to it. It goes to age 6.

i was looking at the trio, but says from 33lb they should use adult belt. argh!!!

I can't find it, but it does look quite similar to the elite. Have you tried her in that?

misdee · 23/11/2004 20:32

yeah. but if she grows 2inches quickly, which she does do (has grown around 20cm in the last year i think) then she'll be out of it and i'll have to get a different seat. tho i could pass the elite onto the baby afterwards.

i may just go for the elite in january then, and hopefully it will fit in with 2 other car seats.

i dunno what to suggest. The sn seat is £145, but some non sn ones are close to that. Would probably be worth investing in . What about the money you can get as a maternity grant? would you qualify for that?

misdee · 23/11/2004 22:52

yea i qualify for that. fortunatly dont need much else for baby so looks like most of it will be going on car seats.

thanks for your help.

misdee · 23/11/2004 23:07

if they come round in time then yes.
