Advice requested on transfer to Secondary school of son with Aspergers

This is my first post and I apologise if anything I ask has been dealt with previously.

My son is 11 with Aspergers and MLD and I am currently dealing with his transfer to Secondary school in Wiltshire. He is being offered 12.5 hours support with a Named Pupil Allowance from the LEA and the school will cover 10 hours support, including lunchtime.

I am convinced he will need more support and I am today sending my submission to the LEA disagreeing with the Statement and requesting a meeting, more in hope than expectation that more will be available.

Is there anyone out there who has been through this and can offer any advice, support or suggestions - anything at all that will help me through this? I have managed so far to deal with everything that having an AS/MLD child has thrown at me, but this is completely panicking me. He attends a primary school which has been completely supportive and is going to be transferred to a school 3 times larger, with less support and all the difficulties of getting himself to lessons with the right kit at the right time.

There are times when I am just so scared for him, not just going to secondary school, but the whole question of his future.

Any words of encouragement would be gratefully received.

Hi Caroline & welcome to mumsnet.

I'm sorry I can't really offer any advice to you with regards to the statement, but am sending loads of sympathy. We are at the choosing secondary stage for our dd. She has medical problems and hasn't had a statement since Early Years. Like you I am finding this transfer particularly worrying. Dd's current primary has less than 200 children and the secondary has 1200, and the site is huge! They seem to have this 'let's wait and see how it goes' attitude, which isn't going to wash!

Your post has reminded me to get back on the phone actually as the SENCo did say she would be back to me with some options by now!
