Anyone’s child have a diagnosis of DLD?

I think this might explain many of DS’s difficulties. He’s 9, Year 5. Always found school learning difficult and the gap is widening. He can read and his maths is good when he doesn’t need to use words. Flies under the radar at school as his behaviour is good.
At home, he struggles to manage emotions and gets particularly upset/ angry when he thinks we haven’t understood him. I imagine at school he avoids this by rarely speaking anyway. He was elective mute at nursery.
I’ve contacted GP to arrange a hearing test -although we’ve never been concerned about hearing, I need to rule it out.
If your child has DLD, how long did the wait for assessment take and was there any helpful advice or treatment? Thanks. Feel I’ve let him down by leaving it so long.

A speech and language therapist can diagnose DLD. We waited about 6 months for the NHS but if you could go privately I guess this could be done quite quickly. My DD possibly has DLD but they are diagnosing or ruling out autism first (which takes longer because there are multiple people who input for diagnosis or not). Did he have speech delay as a toddler? My DD is only 4 (in a week) so the techniques we have for her would be too young for your DS but there is a recommended book for older children called 'DLD and Me'

Thank you for your response. Our waiting times are much longer than 6 months here but I will start looking at strategies in the meantime.
