My DS is due to have his 2nd dose of the pneumococcul jab "Prevenar" on Monday - he was given the 1st does whilst in hospital one time earlier this year - and without me fully understanding what was being given.
I have heard some things about this jab...mainly that it "might" not be properly tested and "might" have some nasty side effects???
DS has already had flu jab and pneumovax 2 jab.

Anyone here in the know - or anyone whose kids had these jabs??

never heard of prevenar until we came to aus - not available for general pop as yet but it was available for my dd due to pre-existing condition. GP assured me it was fine ( in Aus) and she is not one for 'pushing' vacs iykwim. I know that dd1 has to have a 2nd dose at a later date... sorry can't be more helpful

Can only assume you're not in the UK. I don't think its usual to give babies flu jab and I don't know of this other one.

No!!

I AM in the UK - Cumbria!
DS has the flu and pneumonia jabs because he is an "at risk" person - with heart defects and immunodeficiency.

prevnar is one of the standard jabs given in the usa. Both my children have had it and have had NO adverse side effects. In fact my ds got terrible ear infections with extremely high fevers with every cold when he was a baby and after his 2nd prevnar jab he never got another one (it's a none positive side effect of the prevnar..helping with ear infections). It used to not be available at all in this country, but eventually became available if you paid for it, or are in a high risk group.

Ah, sorry slightlymad, I must pay more attention. Was he OK after the last one? Don't really know how I'd feel about it, if he's at risk its a different situation.

Interesting about the ear infections.....DS had infection after infection - has had 2 this month already!
BUT - he has already had one dose of the prevenar and is still getting the infections - so maybe this isn't going to be the case with him!
He's just been referred to ENT about it all actually.

Anyway - he's getting his 2nd dose tomorrow evening!

my ds's ear infections didn't stop until after the 2nd dose, so there's hope yet.
