Flying with a 2 yr old who is not suitable for his own seat

Were planning a trip to see friends in April and will be flying from southampton to Newcastle. Just looked at Flybe website and they say that over 2's need their own seat and therefore charge for one. My ds (although able to sit independantly for small amounts of time) wouldnt be suitable for his own chair and would still need to sit on on of our laps.

I havent contacted the airline yet but I wondered if anyone else has encountered this problem and whether the airline were helpful....?

Thanks

Just watch out how much their callcentre costs - I remember it being very expensive in the past!
