dear mums

i just joined this forum to get support and advice and ideas on how to help my dear son who has autism + apraxia

he is 7 and still without speech and i am disappointed by the number of years wasted waiting for a diagnosis ...we live in a trilingual environment and was told that this was the reason...while i knew it was autism from the start..

my other children speak perfectly 3 languages so i would not think that the trilingual envionment makes my son speak delayed or not appear

i was advised recently to use talktool with him,,...here in the UK it is not an approved by the NHS

my son is using PECS and he progressed really well...
some therapists advised me to avoid PECS and focus on PODD
other advised to focus on intensive interaction and ABA

please share your experience on what has helped your son most to talk.

There is a shift moving on from PECS to using systems like core boards - like PODD. I am a huge advocate for high tec AAC (e.g. proloquo2go, grid for iPad) PODD is a light tec version of AAC systems. But implementation is the same. It's not super much about the system but how you use it. My DS's language bloomed. There is a well known family who use PODD who you can look at...they are called we speak PODD on Facebook.

Thanks very much for your reply and advice.

Do you mean his speech bloomed because of using PODD?

His speech bloomed because of the high tec AAC device. The way it's implemented is the same as PODD, it's just that PODD is not high tec. But the principle of attributing meaning and modelling helped loads. Assistive Ware have great modelling videos on YouTube.

My son is 7 and we have no speech too but cognition is really good .We just moved to hi tech AAC though he has been using pecs well .
We also just started aba so hopefully all should help too .
He's trying to vocalise now though just the first syllable as he cannot say it if it's too long .
