My girlie is poorly

My poor DD2 is really unwell.

The doc thinks she has tonsillitis - the last time she had this she nearly got admitted as she was so ill.

But the worst bit is that due to her GDD and lack of speech she can't tell us what's wrong, so we have to play a guessing game and point to bits of her body asking her what hurts. And as she has learning difficulties she doesn't seem to understand the concept of 'hurt' or if she does she can't display it.

Isn't it bloody awful when our kids are ill?? It's bad enough for any child to be so poorly but when they have SN it seems so much worse.

Please send healing vibes her way!!

Oh Sidge i can completey understand what your going through right now as my son has just go to the end of his viral infection and it was a nightmare. Like you say when a child with SN gets unwell it just seems magnified as they often cant tell us whats wrong, where it hurts etc so we have to guess and then I, for one, get so angry when Im not helping my ds to get better, makes me feel bloody helpless.

My son was constantly grupy for 2 weeks solis, I hate seeing him ill like any parent does I know but even the common cold seems to hit him 10 fold.

Sending many mnay healing vibes your dd's way XXXXX

You both have my sympathy. My son also has GDD and lack of speech / ability to point to where it hurts. such a frustrating guessing game and horrible to see them poorly.
He had a nasty dose of croup a few weeks ago and it was so distressing for him, though at least the cough made the cause of the poorliness clearer than when it is ears or tonsils!

Hope your DD is on the mend soon and you get some rest too.

jinglebells2shoessmells · 30/11/2007 21:46

sending lots of healing vibes.
It is so horrid not knowing what it wrong. I feel for you.

yurt1 · 30/11/2007 22:23

ds1 learned to point to where it hurts when he was 6. It does make a difference. Much sympathy. Hope she's better soon.

TotalChaos · 30/11/2007 22:27

poor thing, hope she's better soon.

Sidge · 01/12/2007 11:42

Thanks everyone. Your healing vibes helped as she is slightly better today The antibiotics are kicking in and she can now drink - hurray!

It's rotten though isn't it, even with her Total Communication Aid we sometimes struggle to find out what's wrong.

Healing thoughts being sent.

To make you feel a little better (and me worse!) my DS had tonsillitis a few times and we didn't know it.

He has now had them removed, thank god, but I felt sooooo guilty when consultant said they were badly scarred.

MinnSpyHandCream · 01/12/2007 18:33

Sidge, can I ask what a total communication aid is?

(Stoopid mother here!)

Sidge · 01/12/2007 21:31

Not stoopid at all, MinnSpy (great name by the way )

Her TCA is an interactive touch screen portable computer-type thing. We have programmed it with common words eg different places, people, foods, drink, nursery activities etc, and she can touch the screen and it speaks the word for her (she has no speech at all). This was she can make choices of her own; we also use Makaton so this complements that really.

They are apparently very sophisticated and can be used all through school and onwards, as they can be programmed with so much stuff.

The website for her device is here - she has an older model (it's on loan to us) but the principle is the same.
