The curious incident of MrsForgetful, her Blue Peter tips, and how ds2 communicated for the first time ever....

Ds2 is now 21 months old and his vocabulary is restricted to "Woweeeeeee!" (when something good happens) and "Oh noooooooooooo!" (if something gets dropped or broken - fairly frequent events in our house. )If he wants anything in particular he expects us to know what he wants. If we can't guess then he screams until we get it right.

So yesterday I was unwrapping an Asda pizza and I suddenly remembered MrsF saying how she sometimes keeps the cardboard circles in case they come in handy later. I think she'd even used one to make a visual timetable. So there I was wondering what I could use the cardboard circle for when ds2 came trotting in and took it away with him (he loves circles). A few minutes later dh came up with the idea of drawing two spirals on one side of the card and spinning it round on an old pencil. Ds2 was absolutely fascinated with it and by the end of the evening my arms were aching from spinning it for him over and over.

This morning when ds2 got up, he picked up the cardboard circle, handed it to ds1 and said "Round-round!" When ds1 didn't understand ds2 brought the circle to me and again said "Round!" So I spun it round for him again and ds2 jumped up and down and clapped his hands with joy.

So, thanks to MrsF and her plans for pizza boxes etc ds2 actually tried to communicate with us for the first time ever. Yippeeeee!

That must be so exciting for you. I bet you can't stop grinning. It made a few tears well up when I read it

tamum · 07/11/2004 12:24

How could I resist a thread with a title like that??? That's such good news coppertop (and a gold star for your dh actually). Do you have any of those flat hologram tops? I'm not describing them very well, but we had a huge collection that kept ds riveted for hours at a time. They spin for ages on a flat surface so it saves your arms a bit.

Well done ds2, and here's to lots more communication

jakbrown · 07/11/2004 12:26

Ah Coppertop, how sweet! Bless ds2, he sounds like a real cutie.

suzywong · 07/11/2004 12:57

Wow, that certainly is a day to remember. Good for you lot.

JanH · 07/11/2004 13:04

coppertop, how completely fab!!!!

I think we might have a couple of the flat hologram tops tamum mentioned - they were in cereal and have roadrunner or something on them, you can spin them in a little stack sometimes if you're lucky, would you like them if I can find them?

mrsforgetful · 07/11/2004 14:45

I am crying here for you- what a fantastic outcome to my obsessive hoarding!!
I will be printing this thread off and showing it to my psychologist.......!!!

My son's love spinning things too!! yest i hadn't thought of this use for the circles!!! Do you remember the small card circles with string through them -again with spirals on them- and you's twist the string tight and they's keep spinning???? if not....then i will have confused you with this!!!!

Anyhow...funnily enough had a 'ASDA pizza packaging experience 'last night too!!!

I was unpacking the pizza and this one had a polystyrene base (Boohoo.....i don't like those!!!)

anyhow- i (without thinking) snapped the circle in half......and alex literally jumped out of his skin!!! He hates sudden loud noises....and was absolutely petrified by this !

p.s...was yours yummy? Ours was a fresh one for a change...4 cheese....but no one liked it except me as they said the base was like a pankake...all mottled with black splodges on the bottom...OH! i explained it was stonebacked/authentic etc...just loike in italy etc....but ofcourse my house is full of 'auties' who hate any change to their food...and this was one of those occaisions!!!

mrsforgetful · 07/11/2004 14:47

read this thread fully now....and something tom always span (which really peed me off ...was cd's...on a pencil ,on a table on the floor....all scratched...memories!!!!!!!

Thomcat · 07/11/2004 18:07

Ahhh, that's fantastic

chonky · 07/11/2004 18:10

Coppertop - am so pleased for you & your ds. I LOVE the title of the thread too

coppertop · 07/11/2004 18:28

JanH - Yes please! Anything that helps with ds2's spinning activities and saves my arms would be most welcome.

MrsF - I'd forgotten all about those spin-on-a-string thingies. I remember making them when I was about 7 or 8.
Yes the pizza was lovely and also one of the Asda fresh ones. We were probably unwrapping them at about the same time!

I've been smiling away all day at ds2's new breakthrough. Where would I be without MrsF and her hoarding capabilities?

OMG .. that sounds brilliant .. so pleased for you .. Congratulations

Sound like a chorus of

You spin me right round baby right round
Like a record baby
round round round round

is in order

(you could also make those things where you thread string through 2 holes and they kind of spin themselves .. will try to find blue peter version if you don't know what I mean )

Hulababy · 07/11/2004 18:45

You will have to set up a cardboard circle bank outside your house! I DO hope you will laminate the next one

ScummyMummy · 07/11/2004 23:23

Fantastic, coppertop. That really is a breakthrough, isn't it? Don't get too worn out with all the spinning though.

wobblyknicks · 07/11/2004 23:25

Excellent news ct!!! Good on MrsF and her handy hints - has she got any for your leftover meths bottles now?? Really pleased for you!!!

JaysMum · 07/11/2004 23:49

Jays Mum xx

eidsvold · 08/11/2004 02:41

that is fab

marthamoo · 08/11/2004 07:57

Oh that is fantastic coppertop !

I have a metal holographic spinner (about the size of a CD) - it's very pretty. Bit knocked about on the edges but you are welcome to it if you want it - CAT me if you are. Should last a bit longer than a pizza circle!

kizzie · 08/11/2004 10:32

This is so lovely- brought a tear to my eye while i'm sitting at my desk.
