Hi, I'm after some advice. Our sin has just turned 11. He has asd and adhd. When he was younger he suffered with constipation and was on medication for it, although this has been sorted for a long time now and he no longer takes any medication. However the issue now is that quite often will not wipe himself or flush the toilet when he goes for a poo. Often if you go into the loo after him you can see the loo is full of poo and there is no used paper in there so we know he hasn't wiped. Sometimes you can smell that he hasn't wiped or the remnants of the poo show through and soil his underpants. He often just sits in underwear in the evening as he doesn't like pyjamas so you can see when the poo seeps through. Does anyone have an advice on how to get him to be better with his hygiene? He goes to high school soon and I worry that he will be teased if other kids smell him. He has suffered bullying in the past and is emotionally quite immature so we do worry about how he will get on in high school. We have tried talking to him about how important it is to be clean, how he doesn't want to be embarrassed if people smell him, but it has no effect on him. We have tried denying him computer time when he does this, tried reasoning wuth him, even lost our tempers with him (although I know this isn't the answer, sometimes it's so frustrating I can't help it). What do we do? Thanks for your advice

Hi OP

My 14 yo was like this.
I put a white board on the toilet door which read

  1. Take your time play robloks ( he used to get up before he finished)
  2. wipe ( we have moist toilet wipes they are much better)
  3. Wipe again.
  4. Wipe again
  5. flush
  6. wash hands

WELL DONE!!

It really worked for my son as he likes instructions and a plan.

Checklist as said and also maybe gloves? my 9yo doesn't wipe, totally refuses and gets me to do it because he's worried it'll get on his hands.

Good suggestion above of a chart. Could you ask him to tick a chart each time he flushes and wipes, and then he gets a reward after so many? I was advised to teach my son to wrap the loo roll round his hand and to show him exactly what to do.
