Hospital nearly killed my baby

DD is in hospital still undergoing this terrible steroid treatment to prevent Lennox-gastaut syndrome. She cries 23 hours a day and is on blood pressure meds.
Bloody nurse tried to give her 10 times the normal dose of the BP med. If we hadn't checked it she wouldhave died!
I'm so angry and scared now.

OMG no hve you asked for that nurse to be kept away - could you transfer hospitals?

very sorry to hear this happened, on top of the stress you, your DD and your family are already undergoing. I would speak to Patient Liaison about this - not sure of the ins and outs of this, but I think it should be reported internally as a clinical incident that resulted in a near miss. and obviously you may wish to make an official complaint as well.

coffee - something similar happened to my dd - it wasn't spotted and she was given the overdose. Thankfully another nurse realised some time later, when the effects were manifesting themsalves and she was given something to reverse it.There were concerns about long term damage for quite some time.

Please ask to see the nurse manager and put your concerns to her, the staff may need to tighten up their protocols. In dd's case it was a problem with the way the prescription was written and this was changed following our 'incident' Sadly a child died from the exact same overdose in another hospital just a couple of years ago

I always check meds and usually when she's in we keep the meds with us but DH went in with her last night as an emergency (she'd only been out 2 days) and he handed over our stash. I've demanded it back and will demand again tomorrow.
Then we can give her stuff when we want too (like the sedative she needed all bloody day but they wouldn't allow)
She's on the wean of the stroids but after showing someimprovement in the screaming stakes was doing a high pitched shriek last night for 4 hours so I got her back in 'just in case'
I've reported it and its being written up as an incident (like the one last week where they were giving her 2 drops of the BP med instead of 0.2 mls) but until I complained they hadn't bothered.
Soon as she's off the steroids she'll be off the BP meds, the antacid stuff and will hopefully poo ok so no more tummy-ache inducing crap and we'll have our happy little girl back. This 3 weeks has been hell and we've done it alone. No help from fucking in-laws (DH's parents) cos they hate disability.

so this isn't the first time they've given her teh wrong dose? This just gets worse and worse.

Get onto PALS and kick up a fuss if you ahve the energy. This is appalling.

I hate compplaining when DD is actually in hospital in case the care gets any worse. Heck, many days they don't even bring food for her.
But today I'm demanding our drugs back as they obviously can't be trusted and will make a formal complaint. DH can't remember which nurse it was but to be honest, most of them just aren't that great anyhow. They forget to bring her meds, forget to come back and collect the pads in her nappy so her urine isn't checked for days on end (despite doctor wanting it done twice a day), forget meals, take 40 min to fetcha bottle while DD screams in hunger.
Can you imagine if we weren't there full time?!
I still feel sick about yesterday. If they'd given the overdose, DD would have gone to sleep. We'd of assumed she was tired and maybe gone off to get a coffee and when we got back she would have been dead. I wonder how many die in similar incidents because either the parents can't be their full time (other kids/jobs etc) or the parents trust the medical staff and don't double check allmeds?
And you know what, it would have been a 'tragic acident' but secretly people would have thought, oh, its amercy as the child was so disabled and now I feel angry tears coming on and that sick feeling in my tummy.

The main thing is that you checked and said something, i know first hand it can be hard to question health professionals but sometimes it is deffinatley essential.

I had something simmilar when i was pg with twins the stupid nurse injected me with a double dose of heparin and i M/C'd the next day.

I'm so sorry Charlee, thats awful. I've been sat reading the stats on medical accidents and deaths and its stupily high. From wrong doses to misdiagnosis. I'm surprised anyone makes it out of hospital alive nowadays.

I know what you mean NMC - i am a horrible mother when in hospital i quizz the dr' sll the time about ds's care (he has cf) I have made an enemy of one pead she told us ds's x-rays showed some 'slight lung disturbence' when in acutaul fact his lung had comletley collapsed! I had a right old rant about that!

My theory is that i know my son and what medication he has so if somebody changes it without telling me why i will ask and make sure they have a damn good reason for it.

OI went for 2 yrs with ds's dr's telling me his cough was due to a lactose intolerence, its not untill i demanded to see a resp specialist and a sweat test did we find out the truh.

needmorecoffee so sorry you have this trouble on top of every thing else, you make sure you kick a stink up its not first time its happened to your dd, as you know i dont trust them now at all and as for mil again i know just how you feel i wish i lived nearee to you for at least some surpost as you given me lots of times.

Hi, sorry to hear about your stress. You should ask what has been done about error. Really that nurse should have pulled from doing rounds until there has been an enquiry and she has had supervised practice. They can find out which nurse it was as she would have signed it. Are pediatric drugs not checked by two nurses these days.

Go to PALS (patient advice service) like some one mentioned b4, they are fab and can help you find out what happened.

I am a nurse and if I almost made such a major error I would expect to suffer repercussions. She could do it again.

nmc - how fucking awful that they did this! Can you give the initials of the hospital dd is in- you're not far from us, is it the kids hospital?

Hope to goodness she's OK soon, what a terrible time you're all having- can't even start to imagine.
