My sons appointment has come through so fast only been 3 weeks since he has seen the HV. Who thinks like his nusery 'senco and me that he's on the autistic spectrum. What should I expect from this appointment? What questions should I ask? I would be really gratefull for any help?

You will probably be asked lots of questions about ds' development so far and also about your pregnancy (straightforward/complications/premature birth/overdue etc). It's a good idea to write a few notes down before you go about the basic things like:

speech/language development (if any)
gross motor skills
fine motor skills
sleep (if ds has problems)

and generally anything else that has concerned you about him.

With ds1 and ds2 the 1st appointment was spent answering questions about ds while the Paed watched to see what they were doing and how they interacted with me. He/she also spoke to them to see what their understanding and interaction was like.

Questions I would ask would be things like:

  • What happens next? Will your ds have a multi-disciplinary assessment, be observed at school/pre-school etc or does your area have a different system for assessing for SN?

  • How long are the waiting lists for any further assessments?

  • Will there be any help for ds while you are waiting for any assessments to be completed? eg staff from our local CDC would visit ds2's pre-school, advise staff, and attend IDP/IEP meetings.

  • Ask if it's worth putting ds' name down on any other waiting lists in the meantime, eg SALT, OT etc. (sorry I can't remember what age/stage your ds is at).

Ds is 3 years old and has his first Salt appointment the day before he sees the paeditrician.I do know that this particular doctor does observe children whilst in nusery settings as he has obsereved my friends son . Thanks again
