As the title says, school are insisting on a PRU for my 10 yr old yr 6 boy, he was excluded for a week and told he couldnt return to school, and instead would be starting a 12 week placement at a local PRU, zero discussion with me before, in fact the head told him, causing all sorts of trouble, point is, I dont agree that the PRU is the right place for him and wont be sending him, does anybody know if they can insist? I tried to deregister him so he could be homeschooled until July, but they wont allow me to and he is currently still on roll...

From you not being allowed to deregister him without the LA's permission, that they won't give, I take it your DS was at a SS? Permission must not be refused unreasonably, so if you are sure EHE is the best idea ask, in writing, why they refuse to take DS off roll. Do remember that the LA won't provide the provision in the EHCP if you EHE.

Was the exclusion legal? What will happen after the 12 weeks? Reintegration or a new school? Have you looked at the PRU? Is the EHCP detailed, specific and quantified? Do you think he needs a reassessment of needs? Have you asked for an early review? Have you got another school in mind you wish to name, or one sorted for the start of secondary?

Lots of questions, you don't have to answer, but things to think about.

Can I ask why? Could you at least trial it? I’ve worked with lots of PRUs from an outside perspective and 99.9% of them are fantastic.

They cannot refuse home education. Just write a letter informing them you will now be home educating.

Annie, if OP's DS is in a special school she needs permission from the LA to deregister. It can not be refused unreasonably, but the LA can refuse.

They can also issue a School Attendance Order, should criteria for one be met.
