Special school for mild/moderate SEN in Bristol/Somerset

We are planning to relocate to the Bristol/Somerset areas for September 2021. Our youngest daughter has SEN and so it is important we find a suitable school for her and this will guide where we look to live. She has Williams Syndrome and is highly sociable though delayed in her understanding. She would thrive in a school with a focus on music and outdoor physical activities. I am very open to private and alternative schools too. Any recommendations?

hi @RubyD - I don't have personal experience but have heard that Sidcot is meant to be quite open and supportive of SEN kids. I can privately tell you some to avoid! General consensus is that most Steiner schools are really poor at supporting kids with additional needs.

Does she have an EHCP? I've heard (but not experienced it) that some of the independent schools won't accept kids with them. Also, if you don't, do what ever you can to get one before you move. The situation in Bristol is utterly dire (just take a look at Bristol Live for stories about it all) and they are missing all statutory deadlines in terms of assessments etc.

Thanks so much for this info and yes she does have an EHCP. I love the look of Sidcot but we have two daughters and couldn't afford to send them both. Not sure we could even send one!! I will need to research more but won't be happening for another 20 months. Shame re Steiner as this would have been ideal

I don't have any school recommendations, sorry. However, if an independent school is named in the EHCP and they are Section 41 registered there are limited reasons they can refuse to admit - the school is unsuitable for age, ability, aptitude or SEN of child OR incompatible with the provision of efficient education of others OR incompatible with efficient use of resources. If you can show state schools can't meet your DD's needs and an independent school is named in the EHCP the LA will pay fees.
