Anyone interested in joining an AS friendship group for 6-11 year olds in Islington?

I have thought for a while about trying to get together a small group of mums and children to create a ready made set of friends for mums and their children who are high functioning AS like my son who is 8 in main stream school and doing well academically but struggling to make and keep friends.

In order to work I think the group would have to be both small and local to Islington, but I don't know if there are any people locally who would be interested.

If you think you might be interested could you please CAT me.

Thanks 3mum

Super idea, shame I'm not near Islington. I would love for my ds to have a few friends.

Unfortunatly we are too far away as well. Good luck though

Thanks both for your encouragement. Not looking hopeful at present.

I would call the NAS and ask them if they would put it on the website or something. Is there an Islington branch of the NAS or Contact A Family or something.
I think it's a fab idea though no use to me as I'm in SE London. I would love it. I actually called a nearby Austism/Aspergers support group - really quite near, just in a different borough, and the person running it said I couldn't come because I didn't actually live in the same borough, even though it wasn't funded by the council or anything. It was quite soon after ds had his dx and I was feeling really isolated, and it took me a huge amount of courage to pick up the phone and it was horrible to get that response. I actually put the phone down and cried.

Actually although unfortunately I can't do this how about we set up a pen friend type group for our kids to write to each other?

My 7 year old son with AS really needs a friend. I wish you guys were closer. He went up to every kid at the park today and without making any kind of small talk he just demanded that they play his game with his rules. They just laughed at him and walked away. Makes me so sad.

I think this is a great idea 3mum. Sadly we don't live near your either but if anyone lives near harrogate and is interested in doing something similar I'm in (sorry for the hijack)

There is an Islington branch of the NAS but it is a bit "in stasis". I would contact them though and also Haringey Autism (also NAS). Also check out YASS which is based in Barnet, very good and caters a lot for AS, run by a parent of a child with AS. AND Resources for Autism also based in Barnet, runs some things for Kanners and AS. PLUS Autism London might be worth checking.
