My son is 2.5 and suspected ASD. He hasn't slept more than 4.5 hours broken sleep a night for about 4 or 5 months, it nearly ended my marriage as we were so exhausted and has caused many a sick day at work (I'm a nurse and do 12.5 hr shifts).

Anyway we finally started melatonin last night, he went to sleep at 7pm (literally never happened) and woke only once for 20 mins overnight, and woke for the day at 7.35am. We haven't slept till 7.35 since my eldest was born 3.5 years ago! We were nearly late for work because we never set an alarm now as we wake every day at 5am with him.
Tonight he was crying to go to bed at 6.45! Please tell me this will carry on forever Grin
I can't tell you the relief I am feeling at the moment! I had to share here as I know you lovely folk will get this!

It made a huge difference to my DS's quality of sleep too, and it trained him in a new sleep pattern so that he hardly ever needs it now. Enjoy your sleep. Grin

I would not rrly on medication though...the long term effects are horrible ;(

Plz try using chamomil...fennel...cumin...hit bath...some sensory play in his room 3 or 4 hrs before sleep time to get him in the sleep.mode

@soumia if only. What long term affects?

danni0509 · 11/10/2019 22:20

@Migrainefun ds is on melatonin. He's started to piss around again lately. I think he needs his dose upping which I'm about to ask permission from his consultant.

but for 6 months he's been better. The best thing is it has got him into a routine of going to bed on his own when for 5 years I've had to sit beside him for hours until he fell asleep.

Good luck and enjoy your sleep Thanks

All sort of horrible effects including deteriration of focis...central nervous system amongst many othrr that are not understoof...

It is medication...

I advise you to search in alternative medecin...avoid chemical medication...it is quick magical but...it destroys your son sneakly slowly... it is FAKE

sourmia melatonin is a hormone that I regulates the sleep wake cycle in the body. We all have melatonin inside us already, the tablets just top up the hormone that is already there. I'm sure it is not prescribed without careful consideration.

My ds takes melatonin. Unfortunately for us it doesn’t have the same magical qualities, in fact he’s been up for the day around 3am for the last week and this is with the slow release version.

Just to balance soumia’s view above... It’s worth remembering IMO that it’s prescribed ‘off licence’ for children. It was not developed for them and the long term effects have not been studied (so far as I know - I’m happy to be corrected). It doesn’t work for all (clearly) and it’s effects can stop over time.

Despite this, it is a life saver for many people which is why it’s used. I hope it’s effects continue to be magical for you.
