Hand flapping

Just wondering if this is ever "normal" iyswim or if it is always associated with ASD?

I'm sure that I can recall it being normal up to a certain age but I'm really not sure anymore! Anyone know?

Taht's exactly how DD1 flaps, bink - wrists about chest level. In fact, I call it 'twisty wristy'.

It hurts me, too!

My DS hand flaps just like that too, Bink! His movements are very rapid, and sometimes he will move his hands to the back of his head and pat them fast, but he has to be doing something with his hands, it's like he almost can't control it. My DS is nearly 8, and being assessed atm, but definitely ticks most of the boxes for dyspraxia, one of which was hand flapping!

Wow, thanks for all of your replies!

I will post in behaviour and development too.

Ds1 is 7 and flaps when he gets upset about something. Ds2 has never really flapped at all AFAIK. Both have ASD.
