The comunity midwife phoned me this afternoon and told be that on the results on Camerons guthrie test his thyroid levels are a little low so they need to repeat the heel prick test tomorrow. Thing is Cameron had bloods taken at the hospital to check his thyroid so am wondering why they need to repeat the guthrie??

Now i am worried that there is something wrong there? I am not in the know where thyroids are concerned what does it mean for him if he has low thyroid levels and can they do anything about it? I know i shouldn't worry until they say that there is something wrong but what with his echo coming up on thursday as well.

I am worried about this echo and ecg although i know they haven't picked up anything untoward yet but i keep thinking that something is going to go wrong! I shouldn't be thinking like that but so far he has been really healthy and my luck doesn't seem to hold out for long.

sorry to waffle again

Do you think there might be a lack of communication somewhere along the line? Seems weird to repeat the heel prick if Cameron has had already his blood taken to check thyroid function. Maybe the midwife doesn't know that the tests have already been done.
Thyroid underactivity is quite common in children with DS. In the past, when individuals with DS didn't receive decent health care, it was probably responsible for a large part of the developmental delay of some people with DS. It is simple to treat it completely with a daily dose of thyroxin, a synthetic version of the hormone. But don't get stressed out just yet - easier said than done I know.

If it is any consolation debbie with my ds he had to have 3 heel pricks due to insufficient amounts atken or uncareful handling of his samples, and in the end there was nothing wrong at all...
Hugs hard to stay calm I know...
