Could we apply for DLA for our dd who has a diagnosis of ASD and PDA

After a lengthy process and several dismissals from CAMHS and the Community Paeds, our dd has been diagnosed with autism and PDA. She is 11 years old and has many difficulties relating to anxiety and demand avoidance which we obviously make adjustments for.
What is the criteria for receiving DLA and is it likely to be granted? I’m asking as I’ve heard the form is long and complex to complete. What is the basis for it being granted?
Many thanks.

Have a look at the Cerebra guide to filling in the form.
It’s worth doing, but be prepared to provide lots of evidence and information.

Dla isn’t actually awarded based on diagnosis. It’s based on a child needing substantially more care than an average child of the same age. My son was awarded High rate dla at age 2.5 before he had any diagnosis. He is now 6 and has a diagnosis of asd and dyspraxia, when we renewed dla recently it was renewed at high rate until he is 12.

Definitely use the cerebra dla guide (if you google it comes up) and look at the national autisic society website, they have a very good section all about dla.

Write lots for each section, don’t feel you have to tick a box if yes or no doesn’t apply- you can write and explain instead. The cerebra guide explains this well.

Good luck.

Yes absolutely. My ds has pda and I’m guessing you’ve probably got a lot of diagnostic evidence that can then be used to help you fill out the form.
Remember to focus on the worst (this can make you feel a bit upset).
It is definitely worth doing.
Any questions you can pm me Smile

Thanks everyone, that’s really helpful. I will ring for the form and go from there. Might come back to you if I get stuck!

Cerebra dla guide - takes you through everything step by step. Remember to give examples of real life situations. Copy everything before sending in so you have a copy and send by recorded delivery so you know they def get it.
