Preschool says DS can't go in tomorrow

Received an email from Preschool today saying DS can't attend his session tomorrow as his 1:1 is sick and the haven't been able to get cover. This is the second time it has happened Sad.

We are waiting for his EHCP to be finalised at the moment and should be in place for September. Preschool had interim funding for his 1:1, but this been used up now. Not sure what to say to them. Obviously can see the issue with funding, but I don't want this to become a pattern. Are they even allowed to do this?

Oh that's so horrible. My darkest moments recently have been around the possibility of exclusion for ds in rec. then they got his EHCP sorted and it doesn't seem like such a possibly anymore for now. Keep strong and hopefully things will be sorted soon.

Does he have a diagnosis? Ds still doesn't but they can put the EHCP in place without it.

Hi, yes, he has a ASC diagnosis. I guess I am just frustrated with it all at the moment. It doesn't help that we have no family nearby so it is the only break I get too.

Anyway, only a couple of weeks until the holidays. Keeping my fingers crossed the EHCP will be in place for September and then funding won't be an issue. Grrr, I wish I could believe this will get easier, but I am not sure it will Confused

Contact your caseworker at LA and ask whether this would be viewed as an illegal exclusion.

Allthewaves · 07/07/2018 01:07

It's an illegal exclusion - look on ipsea. R they fighting you on the echp? This will give you a styling case why needs to be in place for September? Are you trying mainstream or special needs school?

I'd respond that sorry your sons 1:1 is sick and you look forward to hearing from them again when she's week to rearrange that session for another day as per his 15 hours entitlement.

Can another member of staff not cover as a 1-1? They must be able to cover for other staff being absent - otherwise if someone was ill they would be calling up 8 families to say they don't have enough staff to keep in ratio.

I am a 1-1 in a preschool where there are several children with 1-1s, and if someone is absent we just provide cover.

Hoping that we will receive the draft EHCP next week. Panel date is in August. Just need the plan to be ok I guess.

Looking at the special schools in the area for reception. DS hasn't made any progress in mainstream. I think it could work better for him, but they have to want him there don't they and I am realising that preschool really don't. I probably should have moved him, but I wanted to give it time Sad

Anyway, I'll speak to them about making up the hours. Don't know what to do if things don't improve. Accept that I'll have to call them out everytime they do this sort of thing or try to move him somewhere else for the year? Move would be to another mainstream setting and it would be an upheaval for DS, which wouldn't be great. Maybe better to focus on getting the LA to agree the school we want? I am nervous about LA agreeing a specialist placement If that is what we decide.

Remember to make sure everything has a paper trail.

So email to confirm phone calls and what was discussed and ask them to reply if they don't agree with your understanding.
Email to ask questions and confirm stuff.
