I keep getting conflicting advice. Can you apply or transfer an echp to a private mainstream school, providing we pay school fees and possibly fist £6k? I appreciate all slt reports etc would also need to be private

have you tried asking the school in question? where i live most private schools don't take pupils with ECHP's, I have heard of one that did which was a very small montessori school.

Well yes and they said they do youbjust have to pay fees and possibly first £6k as did my sons case worker but sendias told me differently..
I have 2 dc with sen, ds1 already has a echp so may keep him where he is but ds2 doesn’t get, so was thinking if I needed to apply for one would I need to move schools,

Yes. My son has an EHCP and is at a private mainstream school. We pay the school fees and top up his support.

PS although it's been incredibly expensive, it has been absolutely the right thing to do for our boy, who has high functioning autism. He has been really happy but we are moving him to a specialist private school in Sept (year 7) because we feel that he is going to need more speech and language support than is available in the senior years at his current school 🙂.
