Finally an appt with paediatrician- poss dyspraxia- might we get a diagnosis ?

Hi,

Ds1 has many difficulties with small and gross motor skills. we have had numerous appts with OT and hosp paediatricians. At his first OTassessment, he scored on the 5th percentile for motor skils and 3rd percentile overall - this led to some OT stuff and we arranged some private sessions . A few weeks ago he had a review apt and had another assessment - I don't know the results of this but the OT said if it was under the 5th percentile, we would be referred to the community paediatrician and an apt has now come through.
So.... what might happen? will this be a poss diagnosis apt? Anyone with any experience? It has been such a long process. Ds is now 11 and going to secondary in sept so really want to ensure things are in place for him at school and a diagnosis would really help with this.

Any thoughts really appreciated..

It's difficult to say but yes our son was diagnosed by the paediatrician at the local hospital child development centre. I believe community paeds also diagnose. It was based on OT assessment and the Dr's own assessment. He was also 5th percentile for motor skills at the time of assessment. The dyspraxia foundation might be able to help more if you haven't already tried them? Good luck and happy to help if you have any other questions! Would be very good to have a diagnosis by secondary school I totally agree. Just also wanted to mention - and I wish someone had told me this a few years ago - there is a big overlap with dyspraxia and sensory processing / ASD. Not to worry you but worth being aware of it you're not already xx

Thanks Dannygirl, that is really useful. Interesting about sensory/ASD overlap- he has some issues in both those areas so can see they would be closely linked. Hope your son is getting the support he needs.

well, apt was very strange. Basically Ds1 has now been referred for ASD diagnosis/assessment as consultant feels strongly he is on the spectrum She said his motor skills were less of a worry and the two conditions were often linked.
I don't know how to feel. Deep down, I knew ds had some ASD traits ( hand flapping, almost zero eye contact, trouble making friends, ) but he is fairly flexible, doesn't have meltdowns if things change/ don't go his way and has coped well in primary school.
Any thoughts/ advice. I feel terrible that he has got to eleven without the support he needs.
