Dx of Dyspraxia

Went to see the Ed Psych today, Ds has a Dx of dyspraxia with some short term memory issues. Surprisingly he was above average for all his reading skills.

We got above ave for reading (me)
Poor short term memory (me)
Poor fine motor skills....his desire to write far outstrips his ability to do so (me)
Exceptional visual/spatial skills (dh)

In essence he has been diagnosed as the child of his parents. Ho hum. Paediatric OT next.

Wish I'd gone into the ed psych buisness. £350 for a morning's work!

Do you know when you will get to see an OT?

I need to talk over the Dx with the SENCO first, and take it from there. He has also recomended that we use 'Write from the start' to help with ds's fine motor skills.....anyone else used it???

We need to get back to the RAF and see if they will fund the paeds appontment privatly...if not I know we are in for a hell of a wait

MB I have just started using it with ds! Well...I have the books have fannied about with it a bit, and given it to the school to photocopy so they can work with it to. It is highly recommended.

Glad you have a dx. I am sure I am dyspraxic. Terrible handwriting, shockingly bad at any kind of sport, no hand to eye coordination at all and running -even for a bus - actually makes me feel physically sick and emotional (!) but none of this really impacts on my life as an adult.

Ds1 finally got to the top of the OT list last year. The OT gave us an excellent book full of exercises. It might be worth having a look at if you do end up stuck on a long list. It's called "Take Time - Movement exercises for parents, teachers and therapists of children with difficulties in speaking, reading, writing and spelling" by Mary Nash-Wortham and Jean Hunt. Not all of the sections will be relevant for your ds but you can pick and choose which bits to use.

It is funny that you should say that Aloha, but as I was reading his DX I kept thinking, 'fuck me, that is me'. Even the short term memory thing....I have learned all sorts of stratagies to cope, and I have passed them on to the kids I teach, never understanding why I used them!

His speech has been dodgy in the past coppertop, so some of that could be v useful....thanks!

I'm not upset by the dx, he is still my lovely ds.....just with a name for it all and with luck some help

Just a thought, if nobody knows the book you want, get the library to order it in for you (costs £1 here) before you invest,a snot all work for everyone.
