Hi my 9 year old son was just recently diagnosed with high functioning autism and I was wondering if he would qualify for an EHCP? I have bought this up its the school before but they told me because he is not academically behind his peers and slightly ahead I would not be able to get one.
I am quite worried as he is in year 5 and I am thinking about secondary schools and want to make sure he gets the right help he needs.
I am thinking of applying for a grammar school as he is quite smart and think this setting would suite him.

Hello,
Yes he can. My son was diagnosed with the same thing at a similar age. The school weren't able to help me much because he was meeting all their targets. I applied for and got him a SEN (they changed to EHCP shortly after).
He doesn't need help to learn he just needs the right setting so he can learn.
good luck.

Hiya, could you please explain to me how to go about the process as I feel I have hit a brick wall. Do I apply to the local authority?
